When women’s health improves, entire communities become stronger.

I am inviting you to join Team Sara for an exciting life-saving campaign called “Mom-A-Thon”. This is a fundraiser to directly benefit mothers and children in developing countries. Globally nearly 5.9 million children will not see their 5th birthday due to preventable and treatable illnesses like pneumonia and diarrhea. And more than 700 women die during pregnancy or childbirth every single day.

As a high school exchange student in 1979 to Bolivia, I saw firsthand the impact that poverty has on maternal and child health. That year abroad had a major impact on my life and sparked my passion for public health. In 1990 I moved from Illinois to Lake Junaluska, NC to work for Andean Rural Health Care (now Impact Global Health Alliance) for over 10 years. I then moved to Chapel Hill, NC and continued to work in international public health until retirement.

Now, 36 years later, I serve on the Board of Directors for Impact Global Health Alliance (the Alliance). Our mission is to partner with underserved communities to make measurable and sustainable improvements for women and children. We have reached over 1.6 million people in the most rural areas of Latin America and Africa for over 43 years in 7 countries.

In my early days of working in Bolivia, I vividly remember a mother asking me to take her children because she was extremely ill with tuberculosis (TB), a preventable disease. She thought she was dying. What would have happened to her children if this mother died from TB? Luckily our staff was trained and had the resources to easily treat this young mother’s TB.

I am inviting you to contribute to the Team Sara Mom-A-Thon campaign so that this important work can continue. All donations to the Mom-A-Thon are being matched. My goal is to raise $20,000! (I increased this due to everyone’s generosity!)
