Imagine a mother giving birth in the dark, with no electricity, no power to provide the basic comforts, and no emergency interventions she might need.
Giving birth in the dark is a harsh reality for many women in the remote and rural areas we serve in Guatemala, where the majority of the residents are impoverished Indigenous Mayans. In Guatemala, the Indigenous Mayan population make up 43% of the total population, yet their maternal mortality rate is over the twice the rate of the non-Indigenous population. But it doesn’t have to be this way – and your support in building solar battery backup systems can drive change.
Solar battery backup systems are built to last, with an expected operation time of 20 years. They are also modular, allowing for easy expansion or replacement. A remote monitoring system and an annual maintenance plan ensure that the systems function optimally, so no mother ever must worry about being left in the dark.
Our total donation goal is $10,000, which equates to the support in building a solar panel system of 6 100Ah 48V Lithium-ion Batteries and 18 580W monocrystalline photovoltaic panels installed in the Casa Materna clinic located in a remote Mayan community in the high-up highlands of the Guatemalan Mountains, home to Mayan people who have suffered for hundreds of years due to the oppression of colonizers. The funding will also support the transportation and installation of these panels and batteries into a remote Mayan community.
This is our fourth installation of a solar battery backup system at a clinic, a crucial step in our mission to provide sustainable healthcare. We partner with expert U.S.-based solar engineers who generously donate their technical expertise, ensuring that the systems are installed correctly, and that local staff are trained in their maintenance.
With your help, we can continue to bring light—and life—to the forgotten corners of the world and ensure that no mother gives birth in the dark. We are building solar power installations at our maternity clinics—community-owned and operated centers that serve thousands of mothers and their children each year. These solar installations are more than just a source of power; they are a lifeline.
Every donation, no matter the size, helps us provide critical health services, education, and support to mothers and their families. Together, we can ensure that every child has a chance to grow up healthy and strong, and that no mother has to face the fear of giving birth without the care she deserves.
Let’s shine a light on hope. Join us in saving lives today!
